Local group donates to help welcome refugees to Lewisham

VAL received a small donation of £150 from a local group of Carol Singers that raised the money last Christmas. In turn, VAL offered the donation to any one of its members who could use it to benefit a worthy local community cause.

We are delighted to announce that Lewisham Refugee Welcome Team were the worthy recipients of the small grant and will use the donation to benefit newly arrived Syrian families coming to live in Lewisham this 2019. Lewisham Refugee Welcome provides volunteer befrienders for Syrian (and other) refugees resettled in Lewisham.  They currently support 14 families, with another 5 expected shortly.

Karen Canty from LRWT said, We’d love to be able to …host a summer picnic or BBQ for our volunteer befrienders. Syrian families who benefit are always saying they want to invite volunteers out and treat them.  I think they find it hard constantly receiving charity without being able to give back - Middle Eastern hospitality is legendary and it would give them such a boost to be able to lavish some of it on the volunteers who work with them and who often become friends.

A huge thank you goes to the Carol singers pictured below and congratulations to Lewisham Refugee Welcome Team.
