We are in a time of incredibly rapid change. Communities are feeling the pressure, and some are being hit hard. The voluntary and community sector has always supported people on the margins - people in crisis – and those needing help to get back in action after setbacks. It is the home of creative and imaginative ways to support communities. As demands increase, resources become harder to find, and local charities and community groups are challenged to do more with less.
This event is a call to action – and an invitation to think about how we can do things better and respond imaginatively to the present challenges. We will learn from community activists who are tackling local needs by direct action to support people in poverty, by entrepreneurial activity to build sustainable services, and through campaigning for social and policy change. Discussions will take place around volunteering, localism, and the impact of welfare reforms.
In an Open Space session, we will identify new opportunities for action and ways of working together and hear from organisations that are successfully responding to local needs. We will also talk about the changes taking place in the Council and how this affects the voluntary and community sector, and new initiatives from Voluntary Action Lewisham and other sector colleagues. Please come and share your views on the future of community action in the borough.
